Hamlet 2

iconiconI haven’t written anything here for quite a while. I feel very much like a rusty spigot which can only be rotated inch by inch, producing a barely perceptible widening trickle of water with each effort. That analogy also happens to pretty much sum up today’s review of Hamlet 2icon. This movie started off so painfully slow and uninteresting it took me twice the time allocated on the DVD to watch it due to pauses and breaks. However, slowly but surely, the plot began to become more interesting and the characters more enjoyable, and before I knew it I, was perched on the edge of the couch cheering them along. The transition from bad to completely awesome was tangible in a way few films are.

A large part of the movie’s success is due to the play Hamlet 2 itself, which comprises the last half hour of the film. To be quite honest, I found myself wishing I could have simply seen the play in its entirety and skipped the rest of the movie, but I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it nearly as much. The  play ties into the characters’ real lives in ways the writers themselves admit they did not plan or expect. When characters unexpectedly take on a life of their own a story truly comes alive.

The part of the movie which stuck with me the most was the musical number “Rock Me Sexy Jesus.” This is not because of any profound significance, moral lesson, or plot twist. It was because the song was litterally stuck in my head for about a week straight. In fact, simply writing about it here is filling my head with the chorus to the point I’m going to have to turn on some Pantera to stem the onslaught. In addition to that, absolutely no one has seen this film; so any time I mentioned to people I had the song “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” stuck in my head they simply smiled and looked at me like I was some kind of religious nut. Please watch this movie, and help me to spread the word so I can converse with people about the musical score in a normal fashion.
